Yes, thats how DVD drives and players work, there is a limited number
of switches though

BUT in most cases, the region check is in software, not hardware, so
you can use something like VLC or MPlayer to watch out-of-region DVDs
without changing your drive's settings or using up one of the few
precious region changes in your drive's firmware.

There are also firmware patches for a lot of common drives that will
make it region-free, and remove the mess of regions altogether.
