Here is part of the email I mentioned in my response to Tony, on the lack of
open-mindedness and tolerance espoused by some of Bush's supporters. My
favorite line is in the conclusion, which ends "only committed Christians
know the right direction to take." As I mentioned, this arrived in one of
our work accounts, though we are not exactly sure why.

While this may not conflict with my right to worship a I choose, it suggests
to me that the writer would just assume I be disenfranchised, since while
religious, I am not a Christian (good or bad).

Dear Family and Friends,

I am writing to you because of my grave concern over the upcoming elections
and the selection of those who will be leading our state and nation in the
future. In my work here at the North Carolina General Assembly, I have had
the opportunity to witness first hand the battle for godly principles to
govern the laws of this state. I have seen those who profess to be
Christians refuse to support bills that protect unborn children and allow
our state to fund abortions and approve the killing of full term babies in
partial birth abortion. Last session, it was very disturbing to see the
majority of Democrats, many professing Christians, refuse to support the
Defense of Marriage Amendment, which would have protected our state from
lawsuits attempting to force our state to accept same-sex marriages with
marital benefits sanctioned by other states. The issue of approving
embryonic stem cells from aborted babies for research threatens to come up
next session. In addition, gambling in the form of an education lottery
looms over the horizon as the primary issue from our Democratic governor and
legislators, in spite of the fact that big gambling organizations and the
Mafia are pushing it.

The very foundation upon which our nation was established by God as a
Christian nation is being undermined, not only by those who don¹t know God
---- but by Christians who are being deceived and thinking that the economy
is the major issue facing our nation. Compromising morality is on the brink
of destroying our homes, our children, and the fabric of our society.
Homosexuality is threatening to replace the family is all areas of
policymaking, both in our secular and church communities. No society in the
course of history that has engaged in this destructive lifestyle has been
allowed by God to survive. I believe that if our nation is to survive and
continue to receive the blessings of God, we as Christians must stand up to
this ungodliness and oppose those who want to lead our nation down that
path.

I urge you to consider carefully whom you vote for in this election. Never
have I seen opposing candidates who claim to be Christian, but who are so
diametrically opposite in their position on the moral issues. Please look at
the issues listed in the enclosed voter guide and review where your elected
representative stands. Ask yourself if he/she would stand for Christian
values or the unrighteousness.

I have enclosed materials on some candidates that I know personally and who
will take a strong stand for righteousness in the public arena. I encourage
you to share this information with your family, friends and your church. The
Bible tells us that when God¹s people are faithful in our relationship with
Him, then He will heal our land. (II Chronicles 7:14) It is up to us to
elect His chosen ones to lead this nation and pray for them to have His
wisdom to do the work. I would also encourage you to examine the beliefs of
your political party affiliation and see if they line up with your Christian
beliefs. Our country is at a crossroads and only committed Christians know
the right direction to take.

With love and prayers,
Elaine C. Funderburk
