Define "heavy handed" ;)

SpamCop isn't open source or a trojan horse, FWIW - it's a service:

Can you give us a little more information? Are you looking for a client
side solution? For what mail client? A server side solution? On what
platform? For how many accounts? What do you consider "spam"? How much
are you willing to pay? Would you prefer to filter mail, or reject it?
How configurable does it need to be, and how much time do you want to
spend training it to recognize your "legit" mail? Do you also want it to
recognize and filter/reject viruses/worms/trojans? Does it have to be a
local software package (whether client or server) or are you willing to
outsource your email to a remote server who will do the filtering for
you? What sort of mail volume do you get on a weekly/monthly basis? What
percentage of it is mailing list (e.g., legit bulk mail) traffic? How
much of it is spam? How much of it is viruses?
