I should add that there is no element of schadenfreude in this observation. I'm quite dismayed at these developments. I am also fairly confident that our forces will be able to put down the uprising. I just wish we hadn't been caught with pants down like this.
I opposed the Iraq war, but my feeling now is that we need to stay the course and try to set up some sort of civil society democracy there. It's our mess, it's up to us to clean it up. And then get the hell out. I don't have a lot of faith in the nation-building ability of W & Co. There is a certain lack of cultural sensitivity in their efforts. Not to mention naivete.
