Theres a difference between what part of the URL comes from the file
system on the web server and what is resolved by the DNS. In the URL
below, only the "travel.state.gov" component is resolved by the DNS name
servers. The spouse_finance(e).html is simply a filename on the web
server. Sorry, can't have www.Aw!F*#%ingH~((.org . But you could have
www.somename.org/Aw!F*#%ingH~((.html, so long as your webserver can find
it and will serve it.

I thought URLs could use only numbers, letters, the underscore, and the
dash?
While researching info for someone, I came upon the following,
*functional* URL:
http://travel.state.gov/spouse_fiance(e).html
Yes, the parentheses are there and are necessary.
Did the State Department (the guvment) get some special deal, or will I
be
able to get www.Aw!F*#%ingH~((.org as a domain?
