Hey Colleen,

I am all about going cheap/generic on a lot of things (OTC drugs, canned
veggies, etc.). But toilet paper, peanut butter, and stereo equipment are
things that I will pay a little more for, because the cheaper brands just
make me unhappy.

I have a JVC compact stereo that I paid less than $200 for on ebay and the
sound quality is amazing. It's a very small stereo (radio/CD/cassette) and
the sound is still terrific, no matter how loud I crank it. Emerson is
inexpensive, but it's just not a quality line of equipment.

I have been very happy with all JVC, Technics, and Sony stuff I've ever had.
You can get more high-end stuff that may sound better and will likely be more
expensive, but these three brands are generally of very good quality and the
prices are not over-the-top.

I'm sure there are other affordable and high-quality brands of stereo
equipment (home and car). I'm just pointing out the ones I have experience
with.

Just my little two cents.
