always go to the source for answers...

"weird symbol" = <b>© Copyright 2003. All rights reserved. All material on heraldsun.com

just use a text editor and remove that character. as far as the July 4th letter, I am also using a Mac and cannot see any problems /until/ i open the source. then i see:

<meta name="ProgId" content="Word.Document">
<meta name="Generator" content="Microsoft Word 10">
<meta name="Originator" content="Microsoft Word 10">

this is a *very* plain page that does not need the "added benefit" of being composed in Word 10 and then saved as HTML. just create the page anew with basic HTML tags and everything should be fine. or just use the XHTML file i have attached.

Council, UNC need to loosen review deadlines

On Monday, June 23, I petitioned the Chapel  Hill Town Council to initiate a review of the time frames stipulated for review of UNC development applications under the new Office and Institutional 4 zoning  designation. The short review period specified in the ordinance provides insufficient time for either the Town Council or the planning board to review important modifications. The town is forced to try to act too quickly, and an adversarial relationship is encouraged between two entities that work best as  partners.

Two nights later, my concern was validated as the town and university agreed to delay the vote on UNC's proposed parking decks in central campus in the interest of fuller discussion. The simple fact is  that 90 days is insufficient for an informed and properly deliberative review. On matters much less important than these parking decks, we on the planning board often take a second meeting before making a decision. This allows time for  staff to answer questions, for board members to research issues, and for informal discussions on areas of concern.

University planning is too important both to the university itself and to the town to give the planning process short shrift. A longer time period for review will give town and gown the space to work together to come up with win-win solutions that best serve both. With major planning for Carolina North under way and with significant changes coming in for the main campus, now is the time for the town  to take a serious second look at these review periods.

Favor: I don't have Windoze and so it's hard from me to test
out and see the problems between the Mac (with any browser) and
InternetExploiter on Windoze. I know that some pages on my beloved wife's political site, http://sallygreene.org/ , are funky. In particular, in
http://sallygreene.org/ontherecord/ If you have Windoze and
IE and have time and are unashamed, could you take a look and tell me
which pages are looking funky and how? I hear that some of the markup is
showing but the Mac is too kind to let me see that. Thanks.
