I've spent some time talking to folks at the NC Collection about
Cackalacky. Many there doubt, as I do, the derivation from the Cherokee
and the Scots. Our doubt is strenghtened by the complete lack of
documentation of cackalacky pre-1950s. in the 1950s and early 60s, several
of us independently recall hearing the term in that period (from several
parts of NC - coast, piedmont, even in MD).
So who on this list or elsewhere has heard or seen the term cackalacky or
cackalackie in the 50s or earlier?
