Actually thanks for the "cackalacky" reference. It was April of 2001. I remember it well!-)
I thought I read it in a Leann Spradling posting. As a Yankee, I was intrigued to see this.

from the nawth cackalacky collection at UNC:
unc linguistics says the native american term for cherokee is tsalaki
pronounced cha-lak-ee. it was later anglocized to cackalacky.
traditional scottish soup called cockaleekie. familiarity with the soup
assisted in the anglocizing of the cherokee name by the scotts settlers in
nc.
they also claim that the term was in use in the 1790s (no evidence to
support this claim was given). looking for a better date.
one thing for sure souf cackalacky comes to the term *after* nawf
cackalacky (as you might expect).
