Company Name: Digital Bridge - Habitat for Humanity
Company Website: http://habitat.org

Job Title: AmeriCorp*VISTA
Job Description: Habitat for Humanity International is pioneering
efforts to put technology and Internet connectivity into low-income
houses for homeowners. This innovative project – the Digital Bridge
Initiative – accords with Habitat for Humanity’s existing mission to
“develop and preserve the dignity of the individual [while] fostering
personal responsibility” (2002 AmeriCorps Educations Awards Program
Application Guidelines, p. 12). Revolutionary in scope, this
technological venture maintains the grass-roots beginnings of the
Habitat project: by providing homes with the appropriate appliances,
in this case, computers and the Internet, preparing homeowners for
success at work and at school. In 2001, 4.8 million working families
experienced critical housing needs; this staggering statistic is all
the more haunting when one considers that this number reflects a 60%
increase in just four years. Of these families, less than 20% have a
computer and Internet access in their homes. These are the families
that comprise Habitat for Humanity’s target population. With the
implementation of the Digital Bridge Initiative, Habitat for Humanity
promises to be even more to these working families – their bridge to
technology and connectivity that can begin to make a difference
between success and failure in today’s technological marketplace. The
mission of the Digital Bridge Initiative is to offer the opportunity
for in-home, affordable computer/Internet technology to Habitat
families, which will open up opportunities for both parents and
children, playing a significant part in improving their lives. The
goals of this initiative are to enhance educational performance and
employability; allow for increased economic opportunities; and
stimulate community engagement and creativity.

In keeping with
Habitat for Humanity’s successful business model, volunteers will be
the cornerstones of this initiative; however, the nature of this new
technological venture will likely attract a new breed of volunteers,
or technology mentors – technologically astute individuals who have
much to offer Habitat families. When this initiative is implemented
in all of Habitat for Humanity International’s 1,687 United States
affiliates, a minimum of 3,500 community volunteers will be involved,
adding an estimated 75,000 annual volunteer hours to the countless
thousands of hours already logged by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.
The ongoing success of programs like Habitat for Humanity cements in
our national consciousness the integral role that community service
plays in our country.

The Digital Bridge Initiative’s efforts to
create a quality universal training program as well as seamless
national distribution of computers with Internet connectivity has the
potential of improving the quality of many Habitat families’ lives.
The overall mission of this project is to reach as many Habitat
families as possible. In order to accomplish this mission, it is
necessary for Habitat for Humanity International to work with
like-minded corporations, foundations, and organizations to create a
successful program.

For the Habitat for Humanity International
Digital Bridge Initiative CTC VISTA, position responsibilities include
assistance in the creation of a VISTA-supported national and community
service volunteer program that will in the end be responsible for
developing and implementing the Digital Bridge Initiative throughout
the 1700 US Habitat affiliates. This includes, but is not limited to,
the development of recruitment and training programs, procedures and
responsibilities for in-field volunteers and managers, establishment
of program objectives and evaluations.

The VISTA member will also
be responsible for assisting in the program development statement of
goals, benefits, and expectations, and the coordination and
implementation of the initial distribution of technology to more than
500 homes in 25-30 affiliate areas in 2004. Service will be based out
of Habitat for Humanity International's headquarters in Winston-Salem,
NC.
