Title: RE: [internetworkers] [Fwd: Inappropriate e-mail you may have received about Silent Sam]

I didn't get it, but then I'm an "N" not a A-C.

FWIW, I don't know what UNC could have done to prevent it... alum directories on CD rom are gradually replacing the print variety (which, of course, could have been used for the same sort of manual re-entering of addresses).  Even if they somehow "locked" the data so you couldn't cut-and-paste it electronically, you'd still be able to do a little split-screen read and re-type activity.

Also, if I remember correctly, the info that they're selling on CD ROM is the stuff that Harris Publishing puts together.  You probably got a call that said "We're updating the alumni directory and just wondered if you have a few minutes to check your information?" They do tell you before you give them any information where the data are going (into a directory for alums).  At the end of the data update part of the call, they usually pitch you a directory for the low, low price of $75.  This is a common fundraising activity for the school, as they get a cut of the profit that Harris makes.

I would be upset only if I'd not given the alumni directory permission to publish any information about me; otherwise, I think the key here is that the "terms of use" are clear (which they were) and that there is a *perceived* level of trust amongst alums of the same school.  If the alums don't behave, well, what can the school do other than say "stop."

I also always give my "list email" to alum directories rather than my "real one".
