Yes, but not all fanfic/slash fiction is chased after adamantly in the US.
Lots and lots of slash fiction is available online, and as long as no-one
is making a profit off of it, it's generally acceptable. THere is
apparently a newer development called RPS or real person slash a subset of
which is BBS (boy band slash), some people think it's "creepy" and
libelous/slanderous/etc. but that remains to be seen.
I do not know of any lawsuits in the US versus fanfic or slash fiction
writers. Warner Bros was considering a lawsuit against slash writers of
Harry Potter stories but is "reluctant to draw further attention to the
unofficial sites." Viacom claims all text and images of Star Trek and
characters thereof are their property, but I can't find reference to them
shutting down fanfic/slash sites (not containing images but just text).
Another reference here:
"And while some TV and film producers have threatened legal action against
slash authors, [Paul] Gross [from the TV series Due South,
writer/producer/actor] pointed out that a fan's fantasies are not an area
into which his copyright extends. "I suppose that character is public
ground," he said. "If you're willing to bring it into people's houses
every week, the [fans] are entitled to certain liberties, wherever their
imagination is carried by those characters."
