valid question, for without knowing which type of auto it is difficult to recommend a quality repair shop. also, there are almost no high-quality shops that work on "everything." lastly, i've never heard of a scan tools ability to determine that the gas cap could be loose. or that that would have caused a 'check engine light' situation. that sounds like some shady explanation, however it is probably that shops minimum fee to take a car in for 1/2 hour (about how long it takes an average mechanic to determine that the gas cap is loose).

as stated in previous emails, it is extremely difficult to find a shop that won't "scalp your wallet." i've heard mostly good things about Al's Garage in Chapel Hill (by GO! Studios), but i've also never taken a vehicle there.

OK. Last time I needed referrels y'all came through for me, so I'll try
agian:

The frickin frackin (*&(*&@#$% check engine light on my car came on a
few days ago and I need to get it looked at so I can have the car
emissions inspection done. Last time this happened a shop charged me
$30.00 JUST to plug in the diagnostic computer and tell me my gas cap
was loose. Had no idea that could cause a check engine light. :-(

Anyone know someplace that can run the diagnostic for me without
scalping my wallet? Durham/Chapel Hill/Hillsborough would be best for
me.

Thanks!
