Thomas, Mark, et al.

Regarding the Business 2.0 article, I read it too. In fact, it is one of the
major reasons I extended the invitation for you all to weigh in. I didn't
think
that any review of literature (magazines, rankings, related web sites) would
give me the answer to the question I was asking: is school worth it?

My major support for the 'yes' side is that it condenses the amount of time I
would spend learning skills that can be applied to a management (or any other)
situation. It was the same thing I considered when I was thinking about
culinary school. You learn in the real world, but you learn faster in school.
Is that worth 'paying money for' rather than 'earning money while'? I think
that in this case it probably is.

As for life experience, traveling, cooking, going to the library - I have done
all of those things in the past and will continue to do them in the future.
That is baseline for me, so the learning I do on the job is almost always
deepening rather than broadening.

My major concern is that the combined impact of lost real world experience and
the salary (I have some significant financial commitments) would be greater
than the overall benefit of paying to broaden my learning in this specific
context. But, then again, I feel significantly more confident with only six
weeks of schooling under my belt.

So, the decision is to go for it. I'll let you know whether or not I get in.

And regarding my original question: Where do you sit on the issue? my dad had
a
pointed remark:

"You shouldn't sit for anything, except maybe a meal. Stand for something,
it's
much more interesting."

Thanks,
jesse
