Air Guitar

If the idea of strumming an imaginary six-string appeals, our web guide to
this increasingly popular pastime should strike a chord

Simon Jeffery
Thursday August 22, 2002

1. Zac "Mr Magnet" Monro, a 31-year-old architect from London, the
reigning world champion, tomorrow defends his air guitar crown at the Oulu
Music Video Festival in Finland.

2. Where should he start? His stunning performance last year was to the
accompaniment of Blur's Song 2 - proving that air guitar is not
necessarily synonymous with the worst excesses of "cock rock".

3. But beginners may wish to try Apache by the Shadows. It has a slow
melodic pace that allows a novice to practice hand movements on his or her
imaginary axe while also trying out some footwork.

4. Once you have that sorted it may be time to try some classic moves:
Pete Townshend's windmilling right hand on Who classics such as Pinball
Wizard or Rick Parfitt of Status Quo's roaring rhythm playing on Down Down
or Caroline.

5. The ultimate idol for most air guitarists is of course Brian May. After
all, he did play on the roof of Buckingham Palace and you don't get more
air guitar than that. He even put together "The Greatest Air Guitar Album
in the World ... Ever".

6. A decision inspired on learning Bohemian Rhapsody had topped an
internet poll to find the number one air guitar track of all time.

7. So you've got a little better, ditched the tennis racket, and are now
ready to move on to some of the serious interpretative stuff. Smoke on the
water (Deep Purple), Since you've been gone (Rainbow) and Walk this way
(Run DMC/Aerosmith) will all give your creative vision space to grow.

8. If you are particularly flash and reckon you can now play air guitar
behind your back or with your teeth (just make sure you keep your hands in
line, it's a beginner's mistake to lose the shape) it may be time to try a
bit of Hendrix. Voodoo Chile can make a breathtaking finale if you smash
your imaginary instrument against an imaginary amp, try this for Smells
like Teen Spirit too.

9. But do try to keep it contemporary - ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin and Thin
Lizzy are all very well but what the youngsters want to see these days is
an accomplished air guitarist throwing himself (come on, it's always him)
about to some Limp Bizkit or Slipknot.

10. Bear this advice in mind, read around your subject to discover the
best poses and you - yes, you - may one day make a world champion air
guitarist.
