You can do it with Red Hat. You cannot do it with Mandrake 7.1 or better
. There ws a Mandrake 7.02 for i486. Maybe it is stillavailable
somewhere on the web.

You can run Red Hat because it is optimized for i386 or better CPUs.
Mandrake is optimized for i586 (Pentium) or better CPUs.

You also have SuSE, Debian, Slackware and possibly Lycoris, Lindows and
others.

Do not expect to run KDE 3.0 + OpenOffice with a i486 + 64MB at full
speed. You can run IceWM or BalckBox or WindowsMaker or AfterStep... or
just with no GUI and use it as a Server box.

If you have a bigger machine, you can use XDMCP and remote-GUI-login to
the bigger machine: exactly, graphical terminal server. Nice and easy.
All the applications run on the server and then, your 486 can use "big
boys" applications.
