I should have also noted that we have three kids ages 3 and under, so we
place a premium on proximity. Just so you don't think I'm totally lazy.

If you're going to be somewhere for a few hours, park anywhere you want. My
parking tickets usually run about $15. Just pretend you're in New York, and
the rates will seem pretty good! This approach works well at Wrightsville
Beach too.

For the UNC neophyte, start out by looking at the UNC Dept. of
Transportation web site:
http://main.psafety.unc.edu/tp/
Their maps really won't help you any, but you should look at them to find
that out for yourself like so many other frustrated people have done.
Believe it or not, there are lots of places to park around the UNC campus-
you just have to know all the nooks and crannies. Took me about 6 years to
learn a good portion of them. For evening events, I'd suggest trying the
lots adjacent to the Ackland Art building, Cameron Ave. on-street parking,
State Employee's Credit Union lot on Pittsboro St., metered spaces near the
gyms, etc. More advanced users will find comfort in the quiet neighborhoods
adjacent to campus. Of course, I cannot reveal the really top-secret
spots...

How does one find out about the lectures and other brainiac events here in
the land of universities and research institutions? And for the
universities, where does one park?
I was delighted to see an ad in the News & Observer for Dr. Oliver Smithies
lecture at UNC. The title was "Fifty Years at the Bench: A Geneticist's-Eye
View of the Breathtaking Advances of Research." Bruce and I drove around
for 15 minutes without finding a parking space. The Haynes Hall lot was
closed and the one just down the street was reserved for an event (perhaps
the lecture itself).
Surely there are many lectures on a variety of topics open to the public. I
remember seeing a fascinating one on acupuncture for horses at NCSU in my
undergrad years (what slides!). Wouldn't it be great to attend a talk on
design, or textiles, or botany instead of seeing a JAG rerun?
Gentle InterNetworkers, what are your sources? Where do you park at UNC?
And if any of you did make it, how was Dr. Smithies lecture?
Linda
