I as well. Called LakeCrabtree and got the following dates:
50 person: June 16th, 30th, July 14th, July 21st
100 person: July 1st, July 22nd
Shelters are more available on weekdays if we wanted
to take advantage of a long summer afternoon.
They are pretty definite on their numbers -- they don't like
to see 100 people crowding in to a 50 person shelter, and when
we talked to them last year they threatened to oust us if we
went much over 50. But maybe we just require RSVPs, make a list
on a first come, first serve basis, and those without RSVPs
are "just hanging out at the park" and aren't "officially" at the
Internetworkers picnic?
Or maybe we wait until July and get the 100 person shelter?
This same issue drove us to Jordan Lake last year and I'd really
prefer to do Crabtree this year... esp. b/c of the Nazi rangers that turned half of our crowd away...

The Triangle Woodturners get a 100 person shelter each year for a
picnic. The 100 people have to be quite friendly to all sit, but the
shelter area is spacious. We have never had anyone check us that I know
and we take a few lathes, grinders and other equipment out to play
around on. (Danger, danger! Power tools!) I would think most gum'nt
types would run up screaming, but we have never been harassed.
The restrooms are fairly close, but you do have to walk some to get to
them. (moral of story: don't wait until the pressure builds...) If you
don't reserve the shelters, don't go out late since there are many
groups that come out in the afternoon to have family gatherings, etc. I
would suggest that a group start around Noon if you don't get a
reservation or the shelter will be occupied. (Do any other geeks get up
early?)
If you are going to set a date and go to Lake Crabtree, I would get a
reservation ASAP. These things are very popular. We reserve one in
February to get the date we want. Roger (in RTP)

My apologies in advance for spamming the list with something work-related,
but this is a *really* good deal - the kind you don't see anymore,
unfortunately.
