yes. the center for media education http://www.cme.org/ is the sponsor and
does not explicitly say that they are asking for fed.$$$ but all the cards
are in place for that asking and for making a PBS of the Net.
http://www.cme.org/access/index_acc.html they're launching a lobbying
group called the "center for digital democracy"

Digital Promise http://www.digitalpromise.org/ are the folks explicitly
asking for the PBSish set up.

see also Gary Chapman's LATimes article
http://www.latimes.com/business/cutting/20010503/t000037177.html

my personal take is that there should be a summit of public space
providers - i'm one of the major ones believe it or not so i have an
interest here - that includes folks working on the varieties of public
spaces (which the CME meeting does not do): veterans like project
gutenberg, perseus project, ibiblio, internet archive and the public
library of science folks, CME/Lessig folks, digitalpromise folks, etc. as
well as folks working on library and archive interoperability like the
open archives initiative http://www.openarchives.org/ and state groups
like NC ECHO http://www.ncecho.org/
