If you're looking for a secure open-source system, the best bet is still OpenBSD (
http://www.openbsd.org/ ); as their home page says; "three years without a remote
hole in the default install".
The best thing about the OpenBSD project is that instead of just fixing holes
as and when they emerge, they do a huge amount of code auditing. The changes
they make then feed back in to the broader open source community, helping
make other unices more secure. They're also the people behind OpenSSH.
The downside of OpenBSD is that it's currently single processor only. It also supports slightly less hardware than some other open operating systems, though it does run on a lot of different architectures (pc, powerpc, sparc, etc). It's also a BSD system, which will probably give a lot of the old skool unix-heads here the occasional fit of nostalgia (hey, it even runs on vaxen).
