DJ FTC/DoubleClick -2: Privacy Probe Related To Complaints --
By Jerry Guidera
WASHINGTON (Dow Jones)--The Federal Trade Commission has launched a
preliminary investigation into Internet advertising firm DoubleClick
Inc. (DCLK) focusing on its data-collection practices, according to
people close to the matter. Federal regulators are looking into a
recent effort by the New York company to
create a massive database of individuals' consumer habits, matching the
information it collects about a given person's Web surfing habits with
public information such as addresses, telephone numbers and specific
purchasing habits, according to sources.
The move is part of the agency's aggressive policing of Internet
concern's privacy practices, and is sure to raise pressure on regulators
and lawmakers to protect online consumers. DoubleClick officials didn't
return calls seeking comment and an FTC spokesman, citing agency
practice, also declined to talk about the probe.
