Heck, worse than that is the combination of AOLTV (set to launch in
the summer) combined with Time Warner's extensive set-top box research
(project Pegasus, which has been going on for years) and those
combined into the Time Warner Enterntainment cable infrastructure.
Privatize the 'Net? While you're at it, say goodbye to WebTV. Wrap it
all up and the number of AOL users that they had before climbs to more
than 100 million. And that's just plain strange. It's very 1984: As a
friend of mine pointed out (He's still working at corporate Road
Runner,) "AOL is no longer the enemy. Oceania is."

There were a number of interesting items in the news today.
Christina
Dyrness bestows the "Media darling for the Eve of the New Millennium"
award on Vivek Wadhwa of Relativity -- richly deserved. For a long
time
I thought of him as just a media whoredog, particularly after his
"casual day" press release stunt last year. But after hearing him on
a
panel or two in various conferences, it's obvious that he's actually a
very engaging & personable speaker. So if he is a media darling,
well,
he comes by it honestly.

Saffron got a mention, too. No awards, just some VC dough and new
offices already.

The big headline, of course, is the Time-Warner/AOL merger. With AOL
as the acquiring party. According to The Washington Post, the first
move post-merger is to use Time-Warner's TV-cable network to deliver
broadband AOL to the home. A chilling thought: taking the Internet
private. OTOH, it's AOL user; they can keep 'em.
