Rob, I mistakenly addressed my reply to your post to Ray.  I don't mind if
someone else who raises meat animals advises also......bobf

Ray, I'm curious.  How to you kill the pigs when they are ready to butcher.
The curiosity is not morbid.  I've actually thought about this.  If I ever
actually make the move and have meat animals.

I have killed just about every edible animal in the Southeastern part of the
U.S.  'twas no big deal.  I was brought up hunting --had my first shotgun,
and was hunting  squirrels and such at age seven.  But, the truth is, I
haven't killed a meat animal in 25 years.  I remember that when I was very
young, and my father had hogs, at butchering time, he would load them up and
haul them away.  He didn't actually kill them himself.

I remember the basics of butchering from rabbits, deer, and such.  But, how
do you actually end the life of the pigs.  You are probably younger than me,
but if you just recently bought the homestead, was it a big deal to accustom
yourself to killing small animals.

I hope I asked the questions in the right way.  I am a meat eater and every
animal I eat from the butcher or grocery has to be killed.  But, at my age, I
have thought about , other than with a pistol, which I think  I could still
do, I don't know how comfortable I'm going to be, with this part of
homesteading.  bobf

Well thanks for that information Lynda. The pigs are castrated. I
really feel for pig #1, he got learned on. Pig #2 got a better deal.
We'll see how they are in the morning.

Definitely not my fav homestead task.
