Well, the test is important because it gives you a starting point.  You need
to know the mineral content of your soils because some things will bind up
other things and affect the chemistry.  You may have a natural buffer going
on, too, that will resist change.  Compost is  both a good neutralizer and a
buffer.
Are you going to lime a pasture or your garden?
