I would like to plant a cover crop in a garden that will be untended until
next spring. The garden area has not been worked for at least six years and
was just recently cleared of six years of brush. Any suggestions?

I'd mix some buckwheat, rye and vetch. Maybe add some crimson clover
and if the ph is right some winter peas. You could sub wheat or barley
for the rye depending on what's available.
It's a little early to plant that mix here, but where you are it might
be right. I'd plant 8 weeks before a hard frost.
You will need to turn this under come spring.
