Me too. I've overly fond of sprouts and even have the children eating them
on a regular basis. Alas, mostly boughten ones. I won't quit growing them
even if I never get a good crop. Dum spiro, specto.

This thread has piqued my interest and I googled about to see if I could gain
any new info. Ya know, it can be frustrating. I remember in my very
misspent youth sitting through Ed Psych and Ed Ed classes and my jaw dropping
with
utter stupidity of them. They were most often what I'd call Boy Scout
classes.
"A person teaching (for example) children with neurological disorders must be
patient. (Oh, really, I'd have thought impatient, good thing I'm taking this
class). A person must be understaning. (Let me write that down). A person
must be honest with the children ...... as well as thrifty, clean, brave, and
reverend."

Next class, same list of Boy Scout virtues.

Remember I said 'misspent'.

Well, in trying to find some real info about Brussels sprouts, I'm getting
the same feeling. Site after site, reference after reference, is the same
old
Boy Scout crap about 'where you grow bs needs to be situated in the sun (you
reckon?) and the seedling need to be watered (I'd have thought baked, good
thing I read that).' What next? Does the gardener need to be thrifty,
clean,
brave, and reverend?

But the only tidbits I gleaned were that too rich a ground will cause the
heads to be loose. Makes sense because that is true of other Brassica as
well.
And that they won't tolerate much acidity.

Beyond that, I don't have a clue as to what to try to do differently.

Might try that thrifty, brave, reverend tack, but likely not.
