Wheat. Wheat seed. Wheat grain. The fruit of the wheat plant. Wheat
berries is what we call them around here.

To all our friends and family:
TJ just called....
He is very happy....he got his first wish assignment, orders came
through today...
He graduates from Naval Nuclear Power Training Command in Ballston Spa,
NY on August 25, after spending almost 2 years in the Navy's Nuclear
schools. There's no graduation ceremony. He has until October 4 before
he is to report to PEARL HARBOR, HAWAII. Yup, he got assigned to Pearl
and will be there for the next 4 years as a part of Submarine Squadron
III, Pacific Fleet, on SSN-722, the USS Key West, a fast attack sub.
It is exactly what he wanted. It is exactly what he has earned.
The bad news is that despite the amount of time that he has before he
has to report to Hawaii, he probably won't be able to come home. If he
is able to come home, it will only be for a short visit, less than a week.
Anyway, I am sooo happy he will be based in the US...he'll be able to
learn to surf and scuba dive, see all kinds of beautiful things in
Hawaii in addition to the various ports of call he will likely see over
the next four years.
I read the sub's history, and while it has seen Middle Eastern waters,
it looks like recent assignments have been off Korea and Japan. From
Pearl, he could go pretty much anywhere underwater. He hopes to earn
his dolphins on the first deployment-he thinks he can do it-I know he
can. :) (Submariners have to spend time learning every 'job' on the
boat, and once they have done that, they earn the coveted Dolphins
insignia pin. I think the average is something like 3 deployments to
earn them, but some people do it in 1 or 2)
Anyway, it's a reason to celebrate....one more positive step to a bright
future.

Bev and Ron
