Do chickens produce more eggs or poop
http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mchickenegg.html
What fun! Thanks, Tim.
". . . resulting in a feed cost of $7.52 in feed per year per hen, an egg production of $13.20 per year, and a net profit of $5.68 per hen-year."
Fertilizer value discussed but not used in this calculation, hm.
I would raise a flock whether it were economical or not. If most American families raised enough hens to produce all their own eggs and used the "waste" to fertilize a veggie garden, we would have better values and healthier citizens.
