Subject: [Homestead] Problems with dog
One of my dogs, adopted from a shelter at 4 months and
now 2 years old just bit my neighbor's kid (the 7
year old was always teasing her, we told him to stop
to no avail). The dog - Lulu - has been spayed at 6
months and has never given me a problem before.
My main problem is that I have a 4 yr old and a 6 yr
old. Lulu is usually pretty calm with them but growled
at them "hugging" her recently. I also live in a
neighborhood surrounded by kids in bikes, roller
skates, etc... and Lulu is now getting too excited
every time she sees anyone passing in front of my
house, even if it is across the street. To make
matters worse, she easily and often jumps the 4 ft
fence I have in my 1 acre fenced yard... I fear
keeping Lulu around here is an accident waiting to
happen.
Do you guys have any suggestions on how to avoid a kid
(or anyone) getting bit by Lulu again ? Would anyone
be willing to take her in ? Please help! I do not want
to have her put down!!
I am willing to give her away to a good home without
kids and far from the agitated life she has here. I
believe Lulu would be fine in that situation. She is
such a great dog! And good guard dog too! She would
probably be a good hunting dog as she terrorizes the
rabbits, squirrels, field mice and even skunks and
foxes around here.
She is toilet trained. I trained her to come on
demand, sit, "quiet" (stop barking). She usually stays
away from strangers but doesn't act like the typical
"fear biter" dog. She never gave me an ounce of
trouble. But her recent aggressiveness at maturity (2
yrs old) tells me that perhaps I'm just too gentle of
an owner for a German Sheppard mix. She was allowed to
stay on the couch just like my other dog Spike. She
doesn't act dominant with me or my husband but she
growled at my kids and at Spike. She still comes when
I call her and does "sit" but the "quiet" needs work.
And what's with the biting ?
Would you guys be willing to look for such a family
for Lulu ? I'm willing to keep her here (muzzled) for
as longs as it takes to find her a good new home, and
I'll deliver her anywhere when she finds a good new
owner!
Even if you are not looking for a dog, any advice
would be great!
Thanks!
