Even before that, in Poland, messages were put on floppy disks then erased. In DOS an erased file is not erased but the first letter in the file is changed to a ? and the disk space is returned to the pool of available space. It is easy to unerase. Party officials had no idea how computers worked so all they saw was a blank disk.
