Subject: [gwl-g] photo releases
I know there was a round on this just recently, but I want to
check out the info in a quote I just read online.
One of my volunteer activities is managing a website for a small
non-profit whose membership is all old women (over 60). They want pictures of
their activities. It is national in scope and they send snapshots from events
in various parts of the country with no releases of any kind and, most
usually, without even identifying the people in the pictures.
This morning, I saw this quote on the Photojojo forum:
"I have a release form I
occasionally use for serious work, but I'm not interested in selling street
photography; it may at some point see editorial use, but you don't need a
release for that.
I do shoots of visitors and
visiting speakers at events at work (I work in a university), and the
marketing dept supplies an assistant to sort out releases.
For other things like open
days, we work on implied consent - all the guide books state clearly that
there will be photographers present and all resulting images may be used for
any purpose.
I would agree that a release is
vital if you intend to sell your work though - you should release people,
children, animals and property."
Is it true that I
could use snaps in my editorial content without releases? Is implied consent
safe? We take pictures at their biannual national gathering and I could post a
notice, as well as announce one, if that would do it. It would surely make my
life easier.
