Larry,

You can keep the ivy looking good, but prevent a take-over, if the stuff is mowed to the ground every 3rd or 4th year.

But to get rid of the stuff, choose from the following:
1. Dig, and keep digging, until it's all gone.
2. Cut off at the main stems, coat the cut surfaces of the stumps with a systemic weed killer, then wait. The best results occur when the cut surface is coated immediately. Even so, you'll probably have to retreat some new growth.
3. Cut off at the main stems, use a string weeder to beat the heck out of the stumps, then immediately apply a systemic weed killer. Again, you'll probably have to retreat some new growth.

Take courage; you can win!

I have just moved to the Pacific Northwest, and the yard at my new
house is being taken over by English ivy. Any suggestions on how to
get rid of ivy permanently will be more than welcome.
