I thought you all might be interested in Burpee's Top Introductions for
2006. If anyone wants high res Jpegs, or an interview, please let us
know.
1. Red Lightning Tomato
Burpee Exclusive 82 days. Lightning in a tomato! A startlingly new look
for fresh
salads and electrifying in the garden. A vast improvement on 'Red
Zebra,' an heirloom from which it is derived, 'Red Lightning' loads up
with brilliant red 2 1/2-3" fruits that are consistently covered with
"hand painted" yellow stripes. The flavor is irresistible too-sweet,
tangy and with a rich aroma. Vigorous plants grow 5' tall, producing
tomatoes continuously until fall. Indeterminate.
2. Black Pearl Tomato
NEW Burpee Exclusive 65 days. A true treasure, 'Black Pearl' is two
different flavors in one cherry tomato. Enjoy right off the vine, but be
sure to put a big bowlful in the refrigerator for a special treat. When
chilled, 'Black Pearl' has a unique, extra sweet, 'Concord' grape
flavor. Indeterminate vines produce 1 1/2",
purplish black fruits in abundance until fall. A rare pearl!
3. Maple Sugar Hybrid Corn
Grilled: Taste like maple syrup
Frozen on the Cob: Taste like sweet corn-cicles
NEW Burpee Exclusive 78 days. We knew from the first bite that we had a
winner. This utterly unique yellow variety had us at "hello". It boasts
sugar levels truly beyond belief, while retaining the full texture and
creaminess of older types. We like it especially grilled to bring out
most of the maple candy flavor. Petite 6-8" ears fit neatly on your
plate. The size also allows for great husk protection, so each ear is a
perfect specimen of kernels packed to the very tip. Isolate from other
corns and plant seeds 8" apart after soil has completely warmed. You'll
love it.
Here's a great story on this corn. At the corn trials in NY state where
some 400 varieties of corn were teste, Burpee discovered this small
breeder doing "synergistic breeding" - breeding two types of corn on one
ear. For example, Super Sweets are really sweet but watery. Sugar
enhanced are more corn flavored but must be picked and eaten in the same
day. Maple Sugar Corn has both genes - it has the creamy sweet corn
flavor with the high sugar level and it can be picked and still taste as
great days later. Interesting note: The Japanese street vendors sell
this corn grilled in the winter. It was so popular they froze it raw on
the cob and sold it in summer like a popsicle. Grilled or frozen, it's
a great way to get kids to eat vegetables.
4. Big Mama Lima Bean
NEW Burpee Exclusive 80 days. Soak up a pot of 'Big Mama' and each
smooth-textured, extra-tasty bean will swell to fill a teaspoon. Bred
from a rarely grown New Jersey heirloom, 'Big Mama' will make "lima
lovers" of your whole family. Healthy too-one cup of cooked lima beans
provides 20% of the daily value for copper and magnesium, plus a
whopping 13 grams of fiber. Easy to grow, the 8-10' vines yield huge 8"
long pods that are packed with giant beans. Harvest fresh when pale
green or allow to dry to white for storing. Delicious!
5. Big Tasty Seedless Watermelon
NEW Burpee Exclusive 85 days. Handy-sized- but big-flavored-'Big
Tasty', with its divinely sweet, perfectly textured jewel red flesh, won
our summer tasting of over 50 varieties. At 10-12" in diameter and 6-8
lbs., 'Big Tasty' is the classic "icebox" size. Like a smaller but
seedless 'Charleston Gray', the fruit has gray-green outer skin and a
firm, crisp, bright ruby red interior and keeps its superb taste and
ripe texture an extra-long time after cutting. Plant with enclosed
pollinator seed.
Realyl, really good tasting. Past the trials taste testing way ahead of
others - absolutely perfect texture - crisp, firm, and juicy sweet.
Smaller and round.
6. Double Click Cosmos
NEW Burpee Exclusive A rainbow of huge double to semi-double flowers
will rain upon your full sun flower garden. Flowers form on tall plants
with lacey foliage all summer, until hard frost. 'Double Click' is a
custom mix of puffy soft tone flowers that are very easy to grow. Direct
sow after lst frost and enjoy the bounty of color and flower forms. Ht:
4'. Annual.
Plants are full of double pom-pom blooms. Looks like a frilly daisy.
Blooms and blooms ; tall cottage gardens
7. Patio Princess Tomato
NEW Burpee Exclusive 65-68 days. Invite this petite tomato plant onto
your patio-and get ready to see and enjoy a bountiful supply of the
tastiest little tomatoes ever. Just the right size for small pots, while
a large tub can fit 2-3 plants. And 'Patio Princess' fruits very
heavily-each 2' plant produces just as many 2Z\x-3" fruits as a tomato
twice its size-a real "mama mia"! Great tasting and perfect for outside
the kitchen door where the kids can pick them.
8. Sky Blue Petunia
NEW Burpee Exclusive Nowhere in the whole wide world will you find an
"April Sky blue" plant like this. Wow your neighbors with the only
spreading petunia that boasts true azure blue blooms. Old-fashioned, low
growing plants are covered with a carpet of 3" flowers all summer,
providing a cool, tranquil "pause" of color in any sunny garden spot.
Beautiful with whites and pinks. Ht: 8". Annual.
9. Yellow Magic Stuffing Tomato
NEW Burpee Exclusive 75 days. A scrumptuous yellow tomato that will
inspire plentiful oohs and aahs. At first glance, you'd swear it is a
yellow bell pepper, with a perfect pepper shape and feel. It's very much
a tomato, though, and makes a tasty conversation piece when stuffed with
your favorite salad. Perfectly sized for appetizers or entrees, 'Yellow
Magic's' walls are uniquely firm, thin and tasty-so preparing them is a
plesure. The mature fruit grows to 4" wide. A delicious and welcome
addition for both gardeners and magicians.
10. Baby Bear Sunflower
NEW Burpee Exclusive Cuddle up to our newest, cutest sunflower ever, the
baby brother of last year's 'Honey Bear', yet with its own personality.
Bursting with tightly packed golden yellow petals, the 8" blooms feature
the friendliest, most radiant faces you'll see all summer. Each plant
grows to a nice 4 1/2-5 1/2' tall, branching freely and flowering
abundantly. Use these uniquely colorful cuties for sunflower groves,
hedges, and dramatic accents anywhere in your full sun garden. Ht. 4
1/2-5 1/2' . Annual.

on their web site.
Thanks,
