Nancy,
Why not plant some inexpensive plants between the fieldstone that you
can walk on and will keep the dirt at bay?. Since you have shade why
not a carpet of Lysimachia nummularia Aurea (golden moneywort) whose
golden foliage forms a mat 2 or 3 inches tall. Aggressive? Yes. But
it's easy to keep it within bounds. Other choices might be Mazus
reptans with it's dense mat of tiny green leaves and a violet-blue
flower bonus in summer. Or even moss -- Sagina subulata. For acidic
soils Mitchella repens (partridge berry) is a possibility.
Take a look at www.stepables.com for some good choices.
