Like others on this list, I've been a reviewer and a reviewee. There are so
many excellent garden books receiving too little attention that I choose
them for the few reviews I do each year. Space for garden book reviews is so
limited that is seems a shame to waste it on unworthy projects. That is,
space is limited for reviews for which one is paid (at least for me).
There's plenty of room for freebies.
When the books I write or publish are reviewed, I am generally very pleased.
But there is one thing that drives me crazy. There's a certain kind of
inexperienced reviewer who feels that for the review to be seen as balanced,
there has to be a criticism of some sort in a positive review. I have even
had a review where the reviewer mentioned a spelling inconsistency, just to
come up with something negative at the end of a praise-filled writeup.
Surely, she could have found something more significant than that to
criticize! I could have! This review was in a weekly paper with a small
circulation, some years ago, but I am still a little annoyed, more annoyed
than if she had criticized the content or structure.
Well, you put your work out there and hope that someone will pay attention.
You just never know what people will focus on or decide to say. And here I
go again. My newest project just came back from the printer this week --
several thousand copies are piled up in my garage/warehouse.
Yes, it is here at last, not vaporware afer all. It is the new book by Rex
Murfitt, "Creating and Planting Alpine Gardens: How to Build Small Rock
Gardens and Work With Alpine Plants." ($22.50, 276 pages, softcover, some
interior color photos.) We worked on it for several years, and now it is
ready for the judgment of one and all. Or almost ready. It is so new that it
is not yet listed on Amazon.com. That's next.
So if you are a North American garden book reviewer interested in rock
gardening and would like a review copy, please write to me off list and give
me your snail mail address and the name of the publication you write for.
I'm bracing myself for what everyone will say. Wish me luck!
