Someone was talking about the fact that woolley adelgid was disappearing. I checked with Peter Del Tredici, Senior Research Scientist of the Arnold Arborteum in Boston. Au contraire, he says. Although it may have been knocked back by the cold weather this winter, the egg masses are on the trees.

The HWA females over winter and lay eggs in masses from April through June.  When the eggs mature the instars grow rapidly and feed voraciously.  If they're out in any numbers we'll know very, very soon.  We'll also know how long it takes them to repopulate...but if the knockdown was as substantial as reported I think the recovery will be slow.  The whole cycle is going to be very interesting.
