Groups like Tilth and others have long set better standards.
It's always great good fun to bash government regulations. I've done a bit
of that myself. And I must admit, thoroughly enjoyed doing it.
No matter what volumes of standards the government put out, some organic
group or groups would object --either too restrictive or too lenient. So should
we leave it entirely to private groups?
Let's say I form an organization called Reasonably Organic Growers
Upholding the Environment. I set the standards for the group as (1) using
compost, and (2) avoiding pesticides unless you really, really need them.
Members of this organization can sell to grocery stores, and their produce bears
a label with large red letters stating CERTIFIED ORGANIC, and in smaller print
the name of the certifying organization and, of course, a web site.
Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea.
