Katy: Not to rain on Doug Green's parade -- I have his book, Landscape Magic and it's a good one -- there's another book you might also find useful. It's Landscape Rejuvenation: Remodeling the Home Landscape by Bonnie Lee Appleton (Garden Way Publishing). It's also available used at Amazon.com for a very low price. See http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0882664964/qid=1085352747/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i2_xgl14/102-2171357-4709721?v=glance&s=books&n=507846#product-details

My husband and I have renovated a couple of landscapes. It's huge amount of work but the 'after' has been very rewarding. My advice: Hire some brawny young muscles to help you out if you can, or a someone to operate a Bobcat machine if you need to go that far. For all those stumps, there is a machine you can rent called a stump grinder, which is easier than digging them out. (Or hire a tree service to do it.) You have to get locates done first: you don't want to run into phone lines or, worse, electrical or gas lines.

As you know, gardens are never done...

Cheers and good luck, Yvonne Cunnington

Has anyone written or seen articles/books on dealing with existing landscapes? I reviewed one book about 18mths ago on the subject, by a guy in New Zealand, but I have never seen anyone else approach the subject.
