Thanks so much for all the wonderful information. First of all, we will NOT spray the ants. Secondly, we will bring in an arborist.
 
As Andrew states, Eastern white cedars are fairly expendable here on Long Island. I've got many mature specimens on my property. I have no idea of their age, this house is 44 years old so maybe they're about the same age.
 
Of course this tree is set into the landscape just the way I like it, as a speciman out on my front lawn. Barbara, it meets every one of those ideal conditions. On the other hand I've been shooting dirty looks at the two ragedy specimens crammed in the back corner of my lot and they still won't fall down. Looking closely at them and the other cedars I found lots of damage around. One has a hole right at the base that I could stick my foot into. Of course I'm too chicken to really do that, imagine if something was in there and ran up my foot!
