I buy carpenter's knee pads in the hardware store. They have a plastic
shell so they last for years. The elastic stretches out eventually but I
knot it to shorten it. They don't slip on me.

Do you have the space to put down an 8-ft pad? I would find that very
awkward. And what happens if you have to kneel in the garden bed itself?

My mother-in-law uses a long-handled grasper and it works well. You get
them where medical supplies are sold.
