We use TDS 8.0 with SQL Server 2000 and 2005 without problems. A quick test this morning shows that 4.2, 7.0 and 8.0 all work with both 2000 and 2005.
Clients run FreeTDS 0.63 and DBD-Sybase 1.06. The perl scripts log in with SQL Server authentication, but using a dedicated login name rather than "sa".
Database versions are:
SQL Server 2000 service pack 3 on Windows 2000
SQL Server 2005 service pack 2 (64-bit) on Windows 2003
Hope this helps!
