Argh! I should have checked. You're right, it's nonstandard. It's
available in many forms, though: a gcc built-in, and in the public
domain:

However, we're using alloca(3) in *one* place (as you know) and in a
very limited way. malloc/free will do the job, of course, and so would
declaring char tmp_out[1024] on the stack. We could assert at runtime
that the UCS-2 string would never be more than that; right now it's
never more than about 160 bytes.
