It seems that object files are compiled not position-indipendent
(PIC)... I always used gcc compiler and it always worked. Which compiler
are you using ?
Try also to specify CFLAGS='+z' in compiler.
Something like
CFLAGS='+z -O2 -g' ./configure --your-options
and rebuild
