I have actually checked to make sure I could access the port with telnet
as suggested in the user manual, believe it or not. Telnet connected as
expected but when I try to connect using tsql I don't get any response
from the server - I see the login packet in the log file but no packet
in return from the server.

Also, the following messages appear at the end of the log file:

17:49:24.975341 tds_process_login_tokens()
17:49:24.977802 tds_client_msg: #20004: "Read from SQL server failed.".
Connection state is now 0.
17:49:24.977893 looking for login token, got 0()
17:49:24.977923 tds_process_default_tokens() marker is 0()
17:49:24.977949 leaving tds_process_default_tokens() connection dead
17:49:24.978010 tds_client_msg: #20014: "Login incorrect.". Connection
state is now 4.

I originally thought this would be an easy thing to get running but it
is really becoming a frustrating problem. Is it likely that something
is set up wrong on the server end?

Dan

If your server is from Microsoft and its version is >= 7.0, you won't
have
trouble logging in with TDS 7.0. Microsoft servers all honor TDS 4.2
connections. SQL Server 2000 supports 8.0, too.

First time connection problems involve connecting to the server and
authentication. To make sure it's not a simple network issue, back up
and
try telnet (per the user guide). If you find the machine and the right
port, the server will accept the connection.

Once you know you have the right address and port, tsql will let you
connect. TDSDUMP will show what ip address and port it's connecting to.
If you use TDS 4.2, the login packet (including your username and
password) is written to the TDSDUMP log.

Regardless of TDS version, if you see some reply from the server in the
TDSDUMP log, you found the server. If you were rejected for reasons of
authentication, you'll see the message to that effect from the server in
the log. If you get no reply from the server, you didn't find the
server.
