*feels like suck a novice* ... I didn't recognize that either, but it works.
If I ping enctux, it return host not found, but it responds just fine to ping
enctux.encompass.enc.
Part of my trouble with this, I think, is my inability to see the whole
network picture and understand how each machine communicates. I'm getting
there, and again thanks for the attention on this issue.
I issued the net config cmd on my box and it returned:
Workstation domain ENCOMPASS
Workstation Domain DNS Name encompass.enc <-- *
Logon Domain ENCOMPASS
* - could this answer you question about the domain 'encompass.enc' working?
Would this be an alias?
... I also attemtped to export TDSDUMPCONFIG=dumpconfig. I was returned to
the prompt, so did it do anything, or where did it put the export?

Chris,
"encompass.enc" is a very unusual NT domain; I'm surprised it's valid.
On a Win32 box, could you try this, just as a sanity check?
$ net config workstation |findstr /i domain
Workstation domain NYX
Logon domain NYX
That is, I'm logged onto the NYX domain here, quite different from my IP
domain.
(I still think TDSDUMPCONFIG will show your freetds.conf is not being
consulted.)
