The problem with your question is that it gets into a combinatorial
explosion. Here are several FAQ entries that relate to your question:

1) Does FreeTDS support MSSQL?
http://www.freetds.org/faq.html#Does%20FreeTDS%20support%20MSSQL

2) How do I compile PHP 3 with FreeTDS?
http://www.freetds.org/faq.html#How%20do%20I%20compile%20PHP%203%20with%20Fr
eeTDS

3) I get a message like "undefined symbol g_tds_err_handler" on Solaris.
http://www.freetds.org/faq.html#autoconf_problem

So, is there anyplace where you can find an answer to the query, "Does TDS
support connecting to MS SQL from solaris 5.8? I am develping in PHP ...".
No, but the preceeding FAQ entries imply that this combination might work.
Is there anyone who is using that particular combination of tools? Maybe,
maybe not. If there is such a person, does that mean that it will work for
you as well? No, because there can be many other subtle differences in
system configurations.

I am using FreeTDS to connect to a particular vendor's database using a
particular scripting language running of a particular OS. Did I know when I
started that it would work? No, but it only took a couple of hours to
download the source, compile everything and integrate it into my
environment, and test that it did seem to be doing everything that I needed.

For me, everything worked pretty much out of the box. After reading the
list for a while, I can see that I was lucky and managed to dodge several
potential difficulties. There are people on the list who are having
problems with date fields, there are people on the list who are having
problems with BLOBs, and there are people on the list who are having
problems with getting GCC to work right on their platform. My application
doesn't (yet) require date fields or BLOBs, and I seem to have have
installed GCC "correctly" on my first try. Your mileage may vary.

This doesn't answer your question, but hopefully, it points the way for you
to answer it yourself. Good luck.
