Not so screwy if you look at it differently:
Memory is addressable by the byte,
big endians view the address space as an incresing series:
ADR VAL
33 00
34 00
35 00
36 01
while little endians view the address space as an decreasing series:
ADR VAL
36 00
35 00
34 00
33 01
which written out in a row becomes 01 00 00 00
