Now, I make no claims to the reliability of that set up since I haven't
tried it myself beyond a simple select-type script. But, I've had reports
that it is working, so take it for what it's worth.

Connections are persistant within a process. One would imagine that when
apache goes to a thread model they will be persistant across the the
server, but that'll take some thread-safing within freetds and presumably
some work on PHPs part too. So, two apache children -> two processes ->
two connections.
