Thanks Brian, your mail was most timely.

I've just set up tdstest but the server is not listening on the port
that FreeTDS is connecting to (4000). I shall (a) try to figure out
which port it is listening on, (b) try to figure out how to tell tdstest
to use that port, (c) examine the dbtest and your code to decide which
method suits me better for top level C coding.

Unrelated hint: remove .deps directory from samples before building.

I'd edited the samples/tdstest.c module and tried building ...

The make was failing with some strangeness ... and I had figured out
from a "make -d" that it was processing the ".deps" directory ...

# make -k tdstest
make: *** No rule to make target
`/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-linux/2.7.2.1/include/limits.h', needed by
`tdstest.o'.

Removing the samples/.deps directory fixed this problem.
