Please join us for the second event in the "What's in Your Watershed?" series, highlighting the work of the Stream Watch volunteers in Trumansburg & Taughannock Creeks.
When: Wednesday, February 27th, 6-8 PM
Where: Ulysses Philomathic Library, 74 E. Main Street, Trumansburg
What: Trumansburg & Taughannock Creeks- What's In Your Watershed?
This event will highlight the importance of baseline water quality monitoring as it relates to "hydrofracking". In 2012, CSI received funding from Tompkins County to collect baseline water quality data for Cayuga Lake streams and creeks, including Trumansburg and Taughannock Creeks.
Speakers will present this baseline data and discuss how water quality might change if "hydrofracking" were to take place in these watersheds. Speakers will include Stephen Penningroth, Executive Director of the Community Science Institute, Elizabeth Thomas, Deputy Supervisor for the Town of Ulysses, a representative from the Village of Trumansburg and CSI volunteers.
Presentations will address questions like,
"How can bans on hydrofracking protect water quality?", "What
kinds of aquatic life can be supported in Trumansburg and Taughannock
Creeks?", "How does the sewage treatment plant impact Trumansburg
Creek?" and "What can I do to protect my watershed?".
The Community Science Institute has partnered with
volunteers to monitor Trumansburg and Taughannock Creek watersheds since 2006.
Volunteers sample 19 locations in the Trumansburg and Taughannock Creek
watersheds. All results are published in the CSI database online at http://communityscience.org/database. CSI is supported in part by the Town of Ulysses, the
Town of Hector and Tompkins County.
A special thank you goes out to the Finger Lakes
Clean Waters Initiative, Hector Clean Waters, the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network,
Back to Democracy and Seneca Lake Pure Waters for cosponsoring this event.
